FAQ´S
1. What is technical oversight in the context of certification systems?
Technical oversight refers to the independent review and advisory work that supports the credibility, consistency, and continuous improvement of a certification system. It includes evaluating assurance models, auditor practices, public audit outcomes, and system-level governance.
2. Is SAJOMA a certification body?
No. SAJOMA is not a certification body and does not issue certificates. We act as an independent technical body, supporting scheme owners in strengthening their assurance frameworks and governance processes. We do not perform audits or make certification decisions, but rather monitor that the audit approach and certification decisions by certification bodies are plausible, objective and based on verifiable evidence.
3. What kinds of systems does SAJOMA provide oversight for?
We support sustainability standards and certification systems operating across sectors such as bioenergy, land use, the circular economy, and responsible supply chains. Our technical expertise includes audit design, risk-based assurance, greenhouse gas (GHG) verification, and sustainability criteria.
4.What does SAJOMA’s oversight work typically involve?
Our technical oversight services include:
Reviewing assurance models and audit methodologies
Providing oversight of certification body and auditor activities
Evaluating auditor qualifications, performance, and consistency
Reviewing public audit reports for transparency and alignment with system requirements
Advising on non-conformity handling, appeals, and escalation procedures
Supporting system updates and continuous improvement initiatives.
5. Does SAJOMA oversee certification bodies and auditors directly?
SAJOMA provides independent technical oversight of certification body and auditor activities. This includes assessing how audit requirements are applied in practice, reviewing auditor competencies, and analysing audit outcomes to ensure implementation is consistent and credible.
We do not act as an accreditation body. Rather, we work in partnership with certification system owners to identify implementation risks and strengthen the assurance system overall.
6.How does technical oversight contribute to credibility?
Independent oversight ensures that certification systems are not only well-designed, but also properly implemented. By reviewing how audits are conducted and how decisions are made, technical oversight helps system owners maintain transparency, consistency, and accountability — which are essential for stakeholder trust.
7. Is SAJOMA’s oversight role public or confidential?
The fact that we serve as a technical oversight body may be publicly communicated by the certification system. However, the specific details of our assessments and advice are typically confidential, unless otherwise agreed with the system owner.
8. How can a certification system engage SAJOMA for technical oversight?
Please contact us directly to discuss your system’s needs. We offer tailored support based on your governance model, technical requirements, and implementation challenges.
